C A L I F O R N I A S T A T E A R C H I V E S GRADUATE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The California State Archives normally employs two graduate student interns for 20 hours a week (subject to available funding). Working hours will be primarily Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, with occasional Saturdays possible. The Archives Division is conveniently located at 1020 O Street (Archives Plaza Light Rail stop, if you are a commuter). Interns start as positions become available, application period is anticipated to open in May 2009. Interns must be enrolled in a graduate program during his/her internship. The Program: The California State Archives Graduate Intern Program provides a structured training program for its interns, which includes explanation and hands-on experience in many stages of archival work from reference to processing. In exchange, interns must commit to 20 hours a week of work and a year commitment. Interns are paid according to the state schedule for student interns (currently $10.04 an hour to start). Depending on circumstances, and after appropriate training by other archivists, each intern: Desirable Qualifications: Ability to work well with public and staff, and as a team member. Good research skills and willingness to learn new skills. Enjoy working independently. The ability to pay close attention to detail and produce high-quality work is a must. Good computer skills, esp. in Microsoft Office programs. Ability to move boxes that weigh up to 40 lbs. Specific experience in archival work is not necessary, but interest in California history and government is encouraged. Who May Apply: Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate program in history, library science, or related field, be able to make a year commitment (during which their student status must be maintained), and, most importantly, be seriously considering a career in archival work.
