C A L I F O R N I A S T A T E A R C H I V E S PRESERVATION
Preservation activities are designed to stabilize and protect documents against damage or deterioration. This includes monitoring the environmental conditions of the areas where collections are stored to ensure a stable temperature and relative humidity as well as maintaining an integrated pest management program. Other activities include boxing at risk materials, polyester encapsulation of maps, documents and photos and maintaining a disaster plan.
During Archives Month (October), preservation staff hold a one day workshop on basic mending and conservation for staff and volunteers of related institutions. More information as well as an application for this workshop can be obtained by contacting Stephanie Hamashin. For answers to preservation-related questions or referral to a professional conservator, contact the Archives preservation staff at (916) 653-8654 Monday - Friday, 8:00-5:00 or e-mail Kevin Turner or Juan Ramos.
