Unprocessed Ballots Report
The following report is a county-by-county estimate of the number of
ballots remaining to be processed to determine the final vote. The numbers listed below
are estimates -- in some cases rough estimates -- of the number of ballots remaining.
Counties are not required to report the number of late absentee ballots to the Secretary
of State's office, but they have been encouraged to do so to provide the public with an
approximate number of votes that remain to be counted.
In California, county election officials have 28 days from the date of the election to
complete the final canvass of votes, however, the final results in most races will be
determined well before that deadline. The extended period of time to review the ballots
is required to ensure that the election officials are able to verify the signatures
of voters on absentee ballots against the signatures on voter registration
cards before the absentee ballots can be opened and counted.
Please keep in mind that the numbers of unprocessed ballots are ESTIMATES provided by
the counties immediately following Election Day. In some cases, the number of unprocessed
ballots may be much higher or lower than originally estimated. Original estimates will be
updated as we receive more precise estimates from the counties. The numbers provided in the
"Remaining to be Processed" column will be updated as we receive new information from
the counties as to the number of ballots remaining to be processed.
